Tilak Varma rescued India's sinking ship with a fighting half-century against West Indies in the second T20I in Providence. Arriving at the crease within the powerplay, the youngster unleashed a fluent 51 and formed crucial partnerships with Ishan Kishan and his skipper Hardik Pandya.

Notably, Varma has now scaled a major T20I record among Indian batters, displacing the likes of Rishabh Pant and former cricketer Robin Uthappa in an elite list.

Tilak Varma becomes second youngest Indian to score maiden T20I Fifty

At the tender age of 20, Tilak Varma made his international debut in the previous game in Tarouba. The cricketer charted a sparkling 39 in a tense run-chase and followed it up with an even better knock in his subsequent innings.

Facing 41 deliveries, the left-hander whacked 51 runs with five boundaries and a six to his name. His innings lifted Team India’s total to 152-7 after powerplay jitters at the top.

Remarkably, Varma has now become the second youngest Indian batter, behind Rohit Sharma, to register his maiden T20I half-century. He achieved the same at 20 years and 271 days, while skipper Sharma achieved the feat at 20 years and 143 days back in 2007.

The youngster soared past Rishabh Pant's record, who registered his maiden T20I half-century at 21 years and 138 days. Here is a full list of the youngest Indian batters to get to an international fifty.

  • Rohit Sharma - 20 years and 143 days
  • Tilak Varma - 20 years and 271 days
  • Rishabh Pant - 21 years and 138 days
  • Robin Uthappa - 21 years and 307 days

Varma's fireworks powered India to a respectable 152-run total. In reply, the hosts are in a disarray, reeling at 10 for two in 2.1 overs.
