Tilak Varma signalled India's counterattacking response against South Africa in the second T20I at Port Elizabeth following the early dismissals of both openers. Arriving at the crease within the opening over of the innings, the 21-year-old dented Marco Jansen's high-flying confidence by accumulating 19 runs off the speedster's subsequent power play over.

Despite their early setbacks, Varma flicked Jansen for a huge six towards deep backward square leg to get India's boundary counter running. His 29-run cameo and a fighting partnership with skipper Suryakumar Yadav eventually lifted the 'Men in Blue' to 180-7 from a precarious 6-2 at one stage.
