Brief Scores: India: 180-7 (19.3 overs) [Rinku Singh: 68* (39), Suryakumar Yadav: 56 (36); Gerald Coetzee 3/32 (3.3), Tabraiz Shamsi 1/18 (4)] lost to South Africa: 154-5 (13.5 overs) [Reeza Hendricks: 49 (27), Aiden Markram: 30 (17); Mukesh Kumar 2/34 (3), Kuldeep Yadav 1/26 (3)] by five wickets (D/L method).

South Africa shattered Team India at Port Elizabeth’s St George’s Stadium in the second T20I to go 1-0 up in their three-match home series.

Rinku, Suryakumar list fighting 50s after early setbacks

After being put into bat first by South African captain Aiden Markram, Team India lost both its openers, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill, for ducks at the hands of the hosts’ new-ball speedsters, Marco Jansen and Lizaad Williams, respectively.

The following over, Tilak Varma dented Jansen’s high-flying confidence with a counterattacking 19-run assault. Varma was eventually dismissed after scoring 29 from 20 balls at the brink of the opening powerplay, thus allowing his well-set skipper Suryakumar Yadav to form another fighting alliance with Rinku Singh.

Both Suryakumar and Rinku bludgeoned blistering half-centuries, with the latter top-scoring in the innings with his career-best 39-ball 68*. Ravindra Jadeja added handy runs in the death until Gerald Coetzee’s twin strikes and rain interruption in the final over halted the Indian innings at 180-7.

Proteas spinners Tabraiz Shami and Aiden Markram also picked up a wicket each in their respective spells, with the former conceding just 18 runs from his four overs.

Hendricks blitzed through Indian attack for easy win

South African openers Reeza Hendricks and Matthew Breetzke clobbered Indian new-ball pace duo Mohammed Siraj and Arshdeep Singh in their opening spells as the hosts raced to 38-0 by the end of their first two overs.

Hendricks himself bludgeoned a 27-ball 49 before a three-wicket burst from Siraj, Mukesh Kumar, and Kuldeep Yadav brought India back into reckoning. Handy contributions from David Miller, Tristan Stubbs, and a four-ball 10* from Andile Phehlukwayo eventually sealed the deal for the hosts with more than an over to spare.

South Africa will now face India in the series-deciding third T20I on December 14 in Johannesburg.
