India's prominent opener Shafali Verma had a poor outing in the decider of the ongoing three-match series against New Zealand Women at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Opening the batting for India Women alongside Smriti Mandhana, Verma could score only 13 runs before Hannah Rowe dismissed her, drawing the first blood for New Zealand.
How Did Hannah Rowe Remove Shafali Verma?
The incident occurred during the fourth over of India Women's innings after New Zealand posted a respectable total on the board. Chasing 233, India Women got a brisk start, with Shafali hitting two boundaries to get going. However, before she could dent New Zealand's chances further, Hannah Rowe getting her prized wicket.
After keeping things tight and conceding only two runs off her first three deliveries, Rowe erred in her line, drifting one down the pads of Shafali Verma.
However, the Indian opener couldn't capitalise on the scoring opportunity, edging it straight to Isabella Gaze, who took a sharp catch behind the stumps.
Although the on-field umpire declared Shafali not out, skipper Sophie Devine managed to overturn the decision with the help of a DRS review. As the TV umpire saw a clear spike in the ultra-edge, the on-field decision was reversed, with Verma making her way back to the dugout.
Yastika Joins Mandhana In The Middle
After Verma's dismissal, wicketkeeper Yastika Bhatia joined ace opener Smriti Mandhana in the middle. At the time of writing, India Women were 39 for one, with Mandhana and Bhatia batting on 19* and 8*, respectively.
