Shubman Gill unfurled a sparkling fifty against Nepal as Team India romped to a 10-wicket win in their final Asia Cup 2023 Group A clash. The dashing opener clubbed eight boundaries and a six in his innings, and formed a 147-run opening stand with his skipper Rohit Sharma.

The lone six Gill struck in his knock occurred in the ninth over of the run-chase, where he stepped out and launched the ball over the head of veteran Nepal spinner Sandeep Lamichhane.

After India’s sloppy fielding allowed Nepal to score 230 upfront, the ‘Men in Blue’ were left to chase down a daunting 145 off 23 overs owing to constant rain interruptions.

Opener Shubman Gill laid out the foundation of a clinical Indian run-chase with back-to-back boundaries in the second over of the innings. His partner Rohit Sharma soon followed suite, with both slapping match-winning half-centuries in their unbeaten 147-run stand.

Gill hit his only six of the innings in grand style against Nepal’s spin veteran Sandeep Lamichhane. The opener stepped out of his crease in the team’s ninth over to inch closer to his seventh ODI fifty.

Through the course of his 67-run knock, Shubman Gill also became the fastest batsmen in the world to cross 1,500 runs in ODIs. The cricketer now sits at 1,514 runs from 29 innings, with four tons and seven half-centuries to his name.

Team India qualified for the Super Four stage of the Asia Cup 2023 through their 10-wicket routing of Nepal.
