Bangladesh and Sri Lanka recently commenced the three-match T20I series of Sri Lanka’s tour of Bangladesh. The first T20I match got a controversial kickstart to the series as Bangladesh’s bowler Shoriful Islam’s wicket celebration reignited the tensions between the countries.

Islam’s recent celebration at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium added fuel to the fire as he dismissed the opening batsman Avishka Fernando for a low score. 

Shoriful began the innings for Bangladesh and got slammed for a boundary on the first ball of the innings by Avishka Fernando. However, on the following delivery, Shoriful dismissed Fernando as he got caught behind the wickets by Litton Das with a thick edge.

While celebrating Avishka Fernando’s wicket, Shoriful Islam did the infamous ‘timed out’ gesture which got the teams to reckon the controversial dismissal of Angelo Mathews during the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023. 

Islam pointed at his wrist while showcasing a watch sign as Fernando walked back to the dugout.

The incident took place during the league stage match between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka as Angelo Mathews became the first player in the history of cricket to get ‘Timed-Out’.

Mathews’ issues with the helmet got him dismissed without even playing a delivery as the Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan stood firm with his appeal against the batter. 

The cricket field has been struck with tensions between the teams ever since the infamous incident as Angelo Mathews and Shakib Al Hasan got into a verbal spat.

In the game, the visitors put 206 runs on the board for Bangladesh to chase as the latter fell short by 3 runs. 

Mahmudullah and Jaker Ali put on a great show in the second innings as the duo scored 54 and 68 runs off 31 and 34 balls respectively. Sri Lanka registered the first win in the T20I series, which will then be followed by a three-match ODI series and two tests.
