Shefane Rutherford reinforced his match-winning prowess for Quetta Gladiators with a tremendous finish to Thursday night's Pakistan Super League (PSL) encounter against the Karachi Kings.

The West Indies power-hitter overcame the pressure and the drama that unfolded at the National Stadium in Karachi to hit 15 runs that the Gladiators required for a victory in the 20th over against opposition pacer Anwar Ali.

As it transpired, Rutherford hammered Anwar for a pair of maximums at the start of the over, the left-hander hanging deep inside the crease in anticipation of the yorker before smashing it over the wide long-on boundary for two consecutive sixes.

The two sixes should've sealed the deal for the Gladiators, but Anwar showed great temperament and resolve in bouncing back with a pair of magnificent yorkers that even the Caribbean assaulter couldn't get underneath and missed the ball completely.

The dot balls revived Karachi's hopes, and they had the chance to take the upper hand on the next ball when Anwar missed a run-out opportunity against Rutherford, who went for a hopeless two after edging the ball to the short-third fielder.

A throw made from there went to Anwar's hands, but rather than aiming for the stumps directly, the pacer stepped towards the three sticks, giving Rutherford the time to put in a last-minute dive and somehow stay intact.

Then, with a run needed off the last ball, the West Indies left-hander backed himself to clear the ropes and smashed Anwar's following ball for a four towards the square leg region, finally completing the victory for his team following a see-saw of fortunes.

It was a moment of great ecstasy for Rutherford and Gladiators and agony for Anwar and the Kings, who suffered their second consecutive defeat of the PSL 2024.
