In the ninth game of CPL 2024 at Warner Park, the Barbados Royals faced a tough challenge against the St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots. The Patriots, batting first, were off to a disastrous start and lost their top three players Evin Lewis, captain Andre Fletcher, and Kyle Mayers without scoring. 

However, Wanindu Hasaranga and Mikyle Louis rescued the innings with an 82-run partnership. Despite a late collapse, Ryan John and Josh Clarkson's contributions with the bat helped the Patriots to reach a competitive total of 153/8.

Wellalage Turns Things In Favour For The Royals 

Chasing a decent total, in the run chase, the Royals struggled early wickets Rahkeem Cornwall was dismissed for 0 and Quinton de Kock, although started his innings well could only contribute 19 runs. 

Then young 21 years, Dunith Wellalage provided a significant push to the team total with a resilient innings and scored 39 runs in 32 balls. He also formed a crucial 49-run partnership with skipper Rovman Powell. 

Wellalage Faces An Unfortunate Run Out

Their efforts kept the Royals in contention until Wellalage faced an unfortunate run-out in the 17 over of the second innings. 

 Anrich Nortje bowled a length ball around the off stump, and Rovman Powell played a mistimed pull shot to deep mid-wicket. The duo attempted a risky second run. Sherfane Rutherford's throw came towards the bowler's end, where Nortje tried to collect it but fumbled. The ball deflected off his hands and onto the stumps. 

Wellalage was trying to complete his run to the non-striker's end and was caught short of his crease. The TV umpire was called in to check, and after review, the decision was confirmed as out on the big screen.

Dunith Wellalage, the 21-year-old Sri Lankan bowling all-rounder, was the man to watch out for in this nail-biting encounter. He made a remarkable all-rounding effort, he picked up pick 3 wickets in his allotted 4 overs and along made a valuable contribution with the bat.

 In the end, Barbados Royals won the match by 2 wickets and are currently in the second position in the points table with two consecutive victories. On the other hand, St Kitts are at the bottom of the points table with just one win in five matches they have played so far.
