Northamptonshire held on to a draw against Yorkshire in their Division Two County Championship match at Northampton’s County Ground.

Chasing 326 for a win, the hosts raced to 250-8 in less than 57 overs before both captains shook hands and agreed to split the honors.

Remarkably, the fast-paced Wantage Road scuffle was also engulfed in a gripping battle between bat and ball highlighted by Yorkshire captain Shan Masood and Northamptonshire’s Indian expat Siddarth Kaul.

Shan Masood and Siddarth Kaul forge a fascinating battle

Indian fast bowler Siddarth Kaul, having made his Northamptonshire debut earlier this month, picked up two wickets in the first Yorkshire innings on Day 1 of their Drawn game at Wantage Road on May 24.

Before trapping George Hill plumb in front of stumps, the Indian speedster also accounted for the wicket of Yorkshire captain and well-set batter Shan Masood for 60.

With Yorkshire securing a 61-run lead at the halfway stage of the match, captain Masood led his team’s run-scoring charge after they slipped to 8-2 in less than three overs.

The Pakistan Test skipper bludgeoned 131 unbeaten runs from just 152 balls to account for nearly half of Yorkshire’s 264-run second innings total to set up a target of 326 for hosts Northamptonshire.

During the course of his knock, Shan Masood survived a number of close calls off Siddarth Kaul, who troubled the batter with a series of inside edges, body blows, close LBW calls and half-chances at slips.

Unfortunately for Kaul, Masood’s wicket kept eluding him as the senior Pakistani batter marched on to his 27th first-class ton to swell up Yorkshire’s lead.

Siddarth Kaul eventually finished with fighting figures of 2-92 in the second Yorkshire innings before Northamptonshire opener Ricardo Vasconcelos steered the hosts to safety with an unbeaten century.

Kaul, who signed a three-match deal with the Northants, will now be expected to face Glamorgan in a month’s time at Cardiff’s Sophia Gardens.
