Things were looking like a dream for Afghanistan a while ago, but the English attack forced them to lose three wickets at a quick juncture. Rahmanullah Gurbaz's fiery 80 was putting the defending World Champions on the back foot, but Adil Rashid spun a perfect web to outfox the Asian side in the second powerplay in Delhi on Sunday.

Earlier in the day, the 21-year dashing opener smacked his maiden World Cup half-century, smoking a 57-ball 80 where he slammed eight boundaries and four maximums. At one stage, Afghanistan were at 114-0 but Ibrahim Zadran miscued against Rashid at mid-wicket.

In the leggie's following over, Rahmat Shah was sent back by the duo of Rashid and Jos Buttler, courtesy of a lightning-fast stumping. On the very next ball, Gurbaz - standing at the non-striker's end - had to lose his prized wicket. Captain Hashmatullah Shahidi played a ball in the on-side towards the left of mid-wicket, where David Willey picked up the ball and threw it towards the keeper in the blink of an eye. As a result, an angry Gurbaz had to go back to the hut 20 runs short of a deserving World Cup century.

At the time of writing, Shahidi and Azmatullah Omarzai, who stitched a crucial counter-attacking partnership against India, are batting in the middle. After 25 overs, the scoreboard is reading 149/3 with Shahidi batting at 9 and Omarzai at 18.
