Comedy of errors by PNG Vs AFG (X)Comedy of errors by PNG Vs AFG (X)

In Match No. 29 of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024, Afghanistan had a dream start against Papua New Guinea (PNG) at the Brian Lara Stadium, Tarouba in Trinidad on Friday and restricted them to 95/10.

Chasing a subpar target, PNG needed crucial breakthroughs and exceptional fielding to stay in the game and restrict Afghanistan's strong batting lineup. However, in the first over itself, PNG fielders committed a series of errors that can only be described as a comedy of errors.

On the fifth ball of the over, bowled by Alei Nao, chaos ensued. The ball was a length delivery angling in on the pads at 117 kmph, which Ibrahim Zadran failed to flick, and it struck high on his pads. He managed to steal a quick leg bye.

The backward point fielder at that time was Hiri Hiri who quickly retrieved the ball and threw it at the bowler's end but missed, with no one backing up the throw. The ball ran away into the long-on region, which allowed the batters to complete three more runs.

A throw then came to the striker's end, where the PNG keeper missed it, and the fielder backed up and also failed to collect it, that resulted in another run being taken.

This series of blunders allowed Afghanistan to add a total of five runs from the single ball, which reflected schoolboy-level mistakes from PNG's fielders.
