In Match No.29 of the ongoing ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024, Afghanistan captain, Rashid Khan, won the toss and invited PNG to bat first at the Brian Lara Stadium, Tarouba in Trinidad.

However, Papua New Guinea (PNG) had a horrendous start, losing their first wicket in the opening over. Captain Assad Vala's half-hearted attempt resulted in a crucial run-out.

The incident occurred when Fazalhaq Farooqi bowled a short ball turning away outside off at 82.6 kmph. Vala punched it nicely on the up past the diving backward point fielder.

Farooqi, stationed at short third man, chased it down and threw it to Gurbaz, who collected the ball and aimed for the stumps at the bowler's end as the batters ran hard for three runs. At that time Nabi's fingers touched the ball and and Vala's bat was not grounded.

The decision was sent upstairs. Side-on replays revealed that Vala's bat was in the air when the ball hit the stumps.

This lazy effort from the PNG skipper cost him dearly. The big screen displayed OUT as Vala departed without grounding his bat, an uncharacteristic rookie error from the experienced cricketer.
