Surrey's wicketkeeper Rory Burns botched a golden opportunity to put the nail in Durham's coffin during their T20 Blast quarter-final clash at The Oval on Tuesday, September 3. In what should have been a straightforward run-out, Burns let a moment of carelessness turn into a costly reprieve for Michael Jones, breathing life into a struggling Durham innings.

After Durham found themselves reeling at 69-6 in the 13th over, it seemed like they were skating on thin ice. However, a gritty partnership between Bas de Leede and Jones began to steady the ship.

Then came the 15th over—a moment where Surrey could have delivered the knockout punch. Tom Curran bowled a wide yorker that de Leede nudged to cover, where Will Jacks made an acrobatic stop, keeping the pressure on.

In the midst of a mix-up between the batters, Jacks fired a throw toward the stumps, where Burns awaited what seemed like a routine run-out. But, in a comedy of errors, Rory Burns failed to collect the ball cleanly and ended up swiping the stumps with his gloves.

By the time he realized his blunder and attempted to rectify the situation, Jones had safely dived back into his crease, keeping Durham's slim hopes alive.

This missed chance turned out to be the turning point, as de Leede and Jones dragged Durham to 121-7 before a late blitz by Ben Raine (23 off 8 balls) catapulted the total to a competitive 162.

Rory Burns' batting woes compound misery

As if the fumbled run-out wasn’t enough, Burns' struggles continued with the bat. Walking in at No. 4, Surrey were in hot water at 24-2. Burns had a chance to steady the ship but managed just 10 runs off 10 deliveries before falling right after the powerplay. It was a performance that added salt to the wound after his earlier fielding gaffe.

Despite Burns' off day, Dom Sibley and Sam Curran came to Surrey's rescue. Both batters struck crucial half-centuries, guiding Surrey to a comfortable victory with two overs to spare and booking their spot in the semi-finals.

With the quarter-final action heating up, all eyes are now on Sussex's clash with Lancashire on Wednesday, September 4, as teams inch closer to T20 Blast final.
