Indian team captain Rohit Sharma had a public outburst on the field during Day 4 proceedings of the Boxing Day Test against Australia. As Yashasvi Jaiswal dropped a regulation catch of Marnus Labuschagne, Rohit punched the air in anger and was fuming in frustration.
With the Border-Gavaskar Trophy levelled 1-1, the Boxing Day Test at MCG turned into a series-deciding contest. Australia had the upper hand with a 105-run lead as they walked out to bat in the third innings with an intent to pile up a steep total. However, Jasprit Bumrah had other plans.
In a sensational spell, Bumrah sent back Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh, and Alex Cary in quick succession to reduce the Aussies to 91/6. The only hope left for the host team was Marnus Labuschagne, who held on to the end of the crease while his teammates crumbled like a pack of cards.
Jaiswal angers Rohit Sharma with dropped catch
However, Akash Deep, who has been wicketless in the third inning, produced a golden opportunity for India. He bowled a back-of-a-length delivery around off stump. Labuschagne, attempting to guide the ball with an open face, directed it straight to Jaiswal. The ball, traveling at a comfortable height, looked like a routine catch, Yet, in a rare lapse, Jaiswal failed to cling on.
While Labuschagne seemed relieved, captain Rohit Sharma lost his cool on Jaiswal. As soon as the youngster dropped the ball, the skipper punched the air in anger and was absolutely livid.
Still, that was a missed opportunity that could prove costly for India, given how Labuschagne can bat deep and turn it into match-defining innings. Yashasvi Jaiswal, who otherwise has been excellent in the field, will definitely feel the pressure of letting his team down at a crucial juncture.
Meanwhile, Australia’s lead has exceeded the 200-run mark, and every single run from here on will intensify India’s odds of losing not only the MCG Test but also the high-stake Border-Gavaskar Series.
