Delhi Capitals (DC) right-hander Ricky Bhui failed to continue his magnificent form in the opening game of the IPL 2024 on Saturday (March 23) against the Punjab Kings (PBKS).

Despite entering the new season in the Capitals jersey on the back of a terrific domestic season, the Andhra Pradesh right-hander was out for just 3 runs following a scratchy seven-ball stay.

Bhui, who was in tremendous touch during the Ranji Trophy 2023-24 for his state team and dominated the runs-chart for Andhra with 902 runs in just eight first-clas games, including four centuries, was out in the most unfortunate fashion when he edged PBKS left-arm spinner Harpreet Brar down the leg side.

Facing the steady tweaker for the second ball of the 14th over in the Capitals' first-innings batting effort, Bhui went for a pull shot towards the on-side. However, the delivery from Harpreet skidded through and got a thin edge before finishing in the hands of wicketkeeper Jitesh Sharma.

The edge wasn't initially spotted by the standing umpire but then a review from PBKS skipper Shikhar Dhawan confirmed the spike as the ball made contact with the upper half of the willow before being caught by Sharma, who is also PBKS's vice-captain for IPL 2024.

It was a bitter end to Bhui's first innings after embracing his new IPL gig in high hopes following a bumper run at the first-class level for Andhra. The prolific right-hander had also been in fantastic form in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament that earned him a bid from the Capitals at the mini-auction.

Bhui had scored 234 runs from his seven innings during India's National T20 championship at an average of 58.50 and strike-rate surpassing 184.
