Ravichandran Ashwin accounted for the prized scalp of England batting great Joe Root on the pivotal Day 4 of the Visakhapatnam Test. The premier India off-spinner outsmarted the attacking Root, who went for a shocking hoick after advancing at the great bowler but could only miscue the ball to the short-third fielder.

Clearly intent on fetching as many as possible after walking out despite carrying an injured finger in the English run-chase, Root blasted his way to 16 off just 9 deliveries but couldn't retain his adventurous streak past the finest spinner in the world.

Ashwin spotted Root advancing at him early and dipped the ball shorter than the right-hander expected. The ball turned just enough to take the top edge on the attempted big shot towards deep mid-wicket and ballooned comfortably into the hands of the short-third fielder Axar Patel.

Ashwin Gets Dangerous Joe Root

Having gone wicketless in the first innings, Ashwin showcased his smarts and artistry once again as he delivered the one that turned into Root and completely thwarted his big-shot attempt. The England batter wore a helpless outlook on his face after being done in by the great Indian off-spinner.

The moment the stroke was miscued, Root knew his fate was sealed as Axar took the most comfortable catch behind square on the off-side as India took their fourth and perhaps the most crucial wicket in the quest to level the five-match series 1-1.

It was Ashwin's 499th Test match scalp for India as the mighty bowler inched ever so closer to the mind-boggling milestone of 500 scalps in the longest version of the game. Ashwin's Root dismissal only reinforced his command and presence in the team as the India still depend quite largely on the legendary tweaker for their fortunes.
