Ravi Ashwin's Ugly Spat With Umpire Marais Erasmus After Stumps On Day 1

The Day 1 of the Visakhapatnam Test between India and England may have witnessed some high-intense play with fortunes shifting back and forth but there was no sense of animosity or any controversy on the cricket field.

However, there was one bizarre incident which caught everyone's eyes after the stumps were called by experienced umpire Marais Erasmus, who had premier India off-spinner and lower-order bat Ravichandran Ashwin animatedly arguing with him over something.

Even as he managed to survive the final over of play with centurion Yashasvi Jaiswal to take India to 336/6, Ashwin wasn't pleased over how the proceedings ended and entered a quarrel with Erasmus while the veteran official tried to calm the Indian giant out.

The incident shocked the viewers and got them head-scratching as to what exactly Ashwin had a problem with. While some wondered if it was the sledging or abuse made by the English fielders during his brief stint until stumps, few questioned if the intelligent cricketer wasn't pleased with the play lasting few minutes beyond the 4:30 PM cut-off time.

Playing four spinners and a solitary seamer, Ben Stokes and company managed to run through their overs and delivered 93 overs on Day 1 in Visakhapatnam.

All the commentators and experts praised the England team for nailing the over-rate for once after being penalised on World Test Championship (WTC) points tally for the same.

However, Ashwin didn't appear too happy with how Erasmus allowed England to bowl at the Indian batters for those extra few minutes past the scheduled clock in their quest to build further inroads into the opposition batting line-up.

Ultimately, Ashwin managed to stay intact at the crease and took India to stumps without another breakthrough provided to England as Jaiswal carried his bat through for 179 not out.
