Indian opener Shubman Gill is set to miss fielding on the fourth day of the ongoing Test match against England, owing to an injury sustained to his right index finger. This announcement comes in the wake of Gill's exceptional return to form, as he scored a magnificent century on Day 3 at Visakhapatnam, marking his first Test hundred in nearly a year as India set a record target of 399 runs for England.

IND vs ENG: Injury blow for India as Shubman Gill sits out Day 4

Gill, who had been experiencing a dry spell since his last fifty-plus score in March 2023, showcased his batting brilliance by scoring 104 runs off 147 balls. His innings was a crucial contribution to the team, especially after India lost captain Rohit Sharma early in the day.

Gill's partnerships with Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel were instrumental in steering India to a commanding position at 211-4. However, his dismissal triggered an unexpected collapse, with the team folding for 255 in the final session of the day.

“Shubman Gill hurt his right index finger while fielding on Day 2. He won't be taking the field today,” tweeted BCCI.

Despite the setback caused by his injury, Gill's performance has been a silver lining for the Indian team. The injury, sustained while fielding on Day 2, has raised concerns about his availability for the remainder of the match, with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirming that Gill will not be partaking in the fielding duties on Day 4.

As England resumes their innings, needing 332 runs more to win, the absence of Gill on the field might be felt by the Indian team. However, the hosts still have reasons to be optimistic, with their bowlers, led by Ravichandran Ashwin—who claimed the wicket of English opener Ben Duckett late on Day 3.
