Veteran Indian pacer Mohammed Shami brought a sigh of relief to the Indian camp, as he dismissed New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson in a crucial juncture of the match. Chasing a mammoth target of 398, New Zealand raced to 219 for two in 32 overs.

However, skipper Rohit Sharma's decision to bring Shami into the attack proved to be a masterstroke as he dismissed Williamson and Tom Latham in quick succession to swing the game into India's favour. With Williamson's wicket, he became the first Indian bowler to have 50 dismissals under his belt.

Most World Cup wickets for India

  • Mohammed Shami- 51 wickets in 17 innings
  • Zaheer Khan- 44 wickets in 23 innings
  • Javagal Srinath- 44 wickets in 33 innings
  • Jasprit Bumrah- 35 wickets in 19 innings
  • Anil Kumble- 31 wickets in 18 innings

Continuing his prolific form in the World Cup, Shami began his spell in an emphatic manner, dismissing Devon Conway on his first ball. He continued his onslaught on the Kiwis, removing the promising Rachin Ravindra a few deliveries later.

If that wasn't enough, he returned to get rid of Williamson and Latham in his fifth over to push New Zealand down on the mat.

As of writing, New Zealand are 225 for four, with Phillips and Mitchell batting on 1* and 104*, respectively.
