Sri Lanka got a much-needed breakthrough in the closing stages of day 01 of the 2nd Test thanks to a brilliantly judged backward-running catch by Kusal Mendis to get rid of a dangerous-looking Shan Masood.

It all happened during the 22nd over of Pakistan's innings when pacer Asitha Fernando banged in a short delivery to entice Shan Masood into a pull shot.

Masood duly obliged, but the problem was that the ball stopped on the surface, and the southpaw could not gauge it. As a result, he went half-heartedly into the attempted pull and ended up top-edging it.

Mendis, who was stationed at short square leg ran backward to complete a brilliant catch and end Masood's knock at a 47-ball 51.

Meanwhile, Pakistan have taken complete control of the 2nd Test thanks to a commanding performance with ball and bat on the opening day.

Wrist-spinner Abrar Ahmed (4/69) and pacer Naseem Shah (3/41) combined to skittle out the helpless Lankan batting-unit for a mere 166 in the 49th over.

In response, Pakistan batsmen launched an all-out attack on the hosts' bowling attack as they erased 145 runs out of the latters' total of 166 in just 28.3 overs.

Opener Abdullah Shafique finished the day at an unbeaten 74 (99) with skipper Babar Azam at the other end. The duo will look to build on the platform tomorrow and bat the Sri Lankans out of the Test match.
