What Will Happen To WTC Rankings if Day 5 of India vs West Indies 2nd Test Gets Washed Out?

Heavy rains in Trinidad on the final day of the second Test may disrupt Team India's pursuit of a series sweep against West Indies and start their World Test Championship 2023-25 on a bang. It has also placed a question mark over the match outcome and subsequent point distributions.

What will the implications be if rain washes out Day 5?

India is on the brink of a convincing 2-0 series win against West Indies, however, relentless downpour is threatening to derail Day 5 of the second Test at the Queen's Park Oval.

The Men in Blue have put in a stellar performance so far on Day 4, leaving the hosts at 76-2 in 32 overs as they chase a hefty target of 365 runs. However, the inclement weather on Day 5 casts a shadow over these impressive strides.

The consequences of this potential rain-induced stalemate are notable within the context of the World Test Championship 2023-25.

A win for India, achievable by bowling out West Indies on Day 5, would offer a maximum of 12 points and a perfect 100% points percentage. A tie, on the other hand, would result in an equal division of six points each and a 50% points percentage.

Nonetheless, should the relentless rain lead to a drawn match, India's gains would reduce considerably to just four points. Consequently, the points percentage for such a scenario would also drop to 33.33%. These numbers are of significance as the WTC ranking hinges upon the percentage of points won.

Adding to the complexity of the situation is the potential penalty for maintaining slow over-rates. Teams stand to lose one championship point for each over short, another key factor in the series' dynamics.

Meanwhile, the Indian fans will hope for the rain to subside quickly so that the bowlers get enough time to pick the remaining Caribbean wickets whereas the Windies fans will hope for the rain to continue so that they can get off the mark on the WTC points table.
