Swashbuckling Sri Lankan batter Kusal Mendis had a tremendous outing in his side's ongoing group-stage fixture against Afghanistan in the Asia Cup 2023. The stylish right-handed batter showcased his scintillating stroke play, compiling a flamboyant half century when his side was in a spot of bother.

After opting to bat first on Lahore's flat deck, Sri Lanka had a flying start to their innings, courtesy of a quick-fire 63-run opening stand between Dimuth Karunaratne and Pathum Nissanka. But experienced all-rounder Gulbadin Naib rattled the Lankan top-order, dismissing both openers alongside Sadeera Samarawickrama. However, Mendis stepped up with the bat, rescuing his side from such a critical situation in the game.

Coming at number three, the stylish batter hammered the Afghan bowlers to all parts of the ground to compile a belligerent half century.

It was also a much-needed knock for Mendis to regain his mojo, as he managed a 21-ball five before being cleaned up by Shakib Al Hasan in Sri Lanka's first group-stage game against Bangladesh.

After Samarawickrama got out, Mendis and Charith Asalanka steadied the Lankan ship, stitching a crucial 102-run stand for the fourth wicket before Rashid Khan removed the latter for 36. As of writing, Sri Lanka are 189 for four in 34 overs, with Mendis and Dhananjaya de Silva batting on 75* and 1*, respectively.
