A cautious KL Rahul was done-in by England’s part-time spinner Joe Root on Day 4 of the first Test match at Hyderabad. The Indian middle-order batter failed to read Root’s straightening delivery from around the stumps, as the hosts lost their fifth wicket for just 107 on the board in the pursuit of 231 runs.

India loses fifth as KL Rahul gets scalped by Joe Root

Team India lost its fifth wicket in the form of KL Rahul when the elegant number four batter failed to read a straightening delivery from Joe Root. The cricketer had arrived to the crease following the sudden dismissals of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill during the 12th over of the innings.

The newly-arrived Rahul soon lost captain Rohit Sharma before he shared 32 crucial runs with Axar Patel. Just as he was looking to set up a sizeable partnership with Shreyas Iyer, the seasoned campaigner was trapped by Root in front of stumps after scoring 22 runs from 48 balls.

Earlier in the match, KL Rahul charted a scintillating 86 for his side in the first innings. His knock, coupled with identical 80s from Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ravindra Jadeja helped Team India gain a 190-run lead at the halfway stage of the game.

England overcame their deficit with steady batting defiance from Ollie Pope on Day 3. The visitor’s number three batter produced 196 runs in the third innings, and set up a 231-run target for the hosts with five sessions still remaining in the match.
