Ravindra Jadeja managed to add just six runs to his overnight score against England on Day 3 as the all-rounder was trapped in front of stumps by visiting spinner Joe Root for 87. Nonetheless, his innings, coupled with identical knocks from young opening batsman Yashasvi Jaiswal and middle-order stalwart KL Rahul extended India’s first innings lead to 190 runs in the first Test match of the 5-match series against the visitors.

Notably, through their batting diligence at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, the three cricketers also managed to achieve a rare first in India’s Test history.

Jadeja, Rahul and Jaiswal scale rare first in history

After Indian spinners folded up the Englishmen for just 246 on Day 1, brash young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal took the visitor’s attack to cleaners with belligerent ball-striking earlier in the innings. The cricketer blazed his side past the 100-run mark while batting alongside silent partners Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill, before he was caught-and-bowled by Joe Root for a 74-ball 80.

Emboldened by Jaiswal’s dazzling act, KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja sculpted crucial half-centuries off their own in the middle-order to take India past the English total, thus setting up a stage for a huge 190-run lead. Rahul pumped out 86 runs and belted eight boundaries and a couple of sixes off Rehan Ahmed in the process, while Jadeja produced 87 runs in the backend of the Indian innings.

With Jaiswal, Rahul and Jadeja all listing identical knocks against England, the trio marked the first instance in Test history where three Indian batters got out in the range of 80s in a single innings.

Notably, Ravindra Jadeja also made his presence felt with the ball earlier in the match by snapping up three key English wickets on Day 1. The star all-rounder received much assistance from spin mates Ravichandran Ashwin and Axar Patel, while Jasprit Bumrah seized the remaining wickets on offer with searing pace.
