Afghanistan all-rounder Karim Janat took a hattrick against Bangladesh in the first T20I of the two-match series in Sylhet on Friday. Janat achieved the incredible feat while bowling the last over, but the hosts held their nerve and secured a fantastic victory to go 1-0 up in the series.

Janat became the second bowler from Afghanistan to take a T20I hattrick after Rashid Khan against Ireland back in 2019, Dehradun. Chasing 155, Bangladesh got off to a poor start, losing three wickets inside the first seven overs.

The momentum was with the visitors, but rain halted the play in the eighth over and Bangladeshi batters got the much-needed break to turn the game around. Towhid Hridoy and Shamim Hossain brought Bangladesh back into the game and added 73 runs for the fifth wicket.

They needed six in the last over with five wickets in hand and a set Towhid at the other end. Janat was bowling the last over and conceded a boundary in the very first ball, bringing down the equation to 2 from five.

The equation was as easy as it looked, but in a dramatic turn of events, Karim Janat took a hattrick out of nowhere. Mehidy Hasan Miraz was the first wicket to fall, followed by Taskin Ahmed edging one through to the keeper and Nasum Ahmed, who found the hands of the third man fielder.

Bangladesh were suddenly eight down, with Janat throwing life on Afghanistan's chances in the game. Towhid was left stranded at the other end as Bangladesh still needed two runs from two balls. Subsequently, Shoriful Islam, at 10, held his nerve and got Bangladesh over the line.

Earlier in the game, Bangladesh restricted Afghanistan to 154 for seven after electing to bowl first. Mohammad Nabi scored an unbeaten 54 with the bat, while Shakib Al Hasan took two wickets with the ball. Both the teams will now square off against each other next in the last T20I on Sunday, July 16, in Sylhet.
