The World Cup 2023 got off to a bang as Jonny Bairstow struck a blazing six off Trent Boult in the opening over of the tournament opener between England and New Zealand, taking place at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The English opener picked up a half-volley down the leg side perfectly and flicked it over the long leg for a flamboyant six.

The first ball that Boult bowled was right on money, as Bairstow could only defend a swinging delivery pitched at length region. The stylish opener took charge after that, seeing the opportunity coming to get the defending champions off to a flyer.

However, Bairstow did not last long, as Mitchell Santner got rid of the dangerous man in the 13th over of England's innings after they were asked to bat. By then, Bairstow reached 33 off 35 balls, laced with four fours and one six.

At the time of writing, England are batting on 135/4 after 24.5 overs, with Joe Root and Jos Buttler in the middle. While Buttler is on 6*, Root is batting on 43*.
