Joe Root and his reverse-sweep/scoop has been the talk of the town in Test cricket over the course of the last 12-15 months, with the English genius enduring mixed results.

On Friday, the results were only positive for Root as reverse swept and scooped the Australian bowlers during the course of a brilliant knock at Edgbaston.

During the 47th over of England's innings, Root attempted a troika of reverse-sweeps off Nathan Lyon. Twice he nailed it for a four, but amid those two boundaries, he survived a very close LBW call thanks to an inside-edge.

However, there was nothing stopping Joe, as he proceeded to audaciously reverse-scoop his nemesis Scott Boland for a huge six.

Watch the video here:

Speaking of the match, Root came out to bat in the morning session after England lost opener Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope within the first two hours of play.

Harry Brook looked good in his brief stay before he endured a freak dismissal off Lyon. Skipper Ben Stokes fell for an 8-ball 1, leaving his team stranded at 176/5.

However, Root and Bairstow, who scored a run-a-ball 78, steadied the ship with a century-plus stand.

Then, in a moment of madness, England lost both Bairstow and Moeen Ali as they ran past an innocuous delivery from Lyon to get stumped. Stuart Broad followed suit after a few audacious sweeps.

Root, however, managed to complete his hundred- his 30th in Test cricket- much to the delight of the packed crowd.

At the time of writing, England had declared their innings at 393/8, with Joe finishing at an unbeaten 118.
