The Big Bash League 2024-25 season witnessed a heated moment between Adelaide Strikers' Jamie Overton and Perth Scorchers' Finn Allen. Overton made a false attempt to run Allen out at the non-striker end and warned him against prematurely leaving the crease.
Big Bash League 2024-25 season saw a big match between Adelaide Strikers and Perth Scorchers earlier today. Strikers batted first and scored 142 runs for the team. In reply, the Scorchers were derailed at an early stage as two quick wickets had fallen with 5 runs in the board only.
However, against the odds, Finn Allen and Cooper Connolly stitched an 84-run partnership for the third wicket. While Allen scored 50 off 23 balls, Connolly hammered 48 runs in 35 balls. Ashton Turner added a quick 35 runs off just 18 balls to wrap up a successful chase for Perth.
Mankad threat leads to war between Overton and Finn Allen
Meanwhile, in a dramatic moment, Jamie Overton, in the midst of a charged bowling spell, came close to running out Finn Allen at the non-striker's end in what is commonly referred to as a "Mankad" dismissal.
Overton, having seen Allen had backed up a bit too far before releasing the ball, momentarily halted his running stride and steered himself in the direction of the stumps. With Allen froze in mid-pitch, the bowler had ample time to appeal for a dismissal, but he was instead sportive enough to warn Allen sternly. This led to an angry words exchange.
The non-striker's end run-out rule is pretty contentious, wherein bowlers get to dismiss a batter who's left his crease before the ball is bowled. While within the laws of cricket, such dismissals often spark debates about the spirit of the game.
Meanwhile, Perth Scorchers moved to second place on the points table with a seven-wicket victory, while Adelaide Strikers slipped to seventh position.
