Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan grabbed a million eyeballs, as he defended eight runs through a magnificent spell in the final over in the US Masters T10 league. The veteran left-arm pacer conceded only three runs and picked a crucial wicket to seal a thrilling five-run win for California Knights in their sixth group-stage fixture against Atlanta Riders, led by Robin Uthappa.
Chasing a steep 95-run target, the Riders were well on course for a commanding victory, comfortably placed at 86 for two in nine overs. As the opponents needed nine runs to win, the Knights' skipper Aaron Finch turned up to the experienced Indian speedster to bowl the final over. His decision proved to be a masterstroke, as Pathan showcased nerves of steel, defending eight runs through his wily variations.
Although he started the over with a wide, the former Indian cricketer conceded just two runs in his next three balls before getting rid of Hamilton Masakadza for a quick-fire 11-ball 20 on his fourth delivery.
He deceived Hammad Azam with a well-disguised cutter and dislodged the bails to run him out. Furthermore, he concluded the over with another dot ball, finishing his two-over spell with incredible figures of one for 13.
Pathan's heroics in the final over secured a fighting victory for the Knights, powering them to the second position in the points table. They will take on NJ Tritons in their final group-stage game in Lauderhill tonight at 7.00 PM IST.
