In what turned out to be one of the most dramatic finales in recent ODI history, the second game of the three-match series between Afghanistan and Pakistan was marred by controversy at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Stadium on Thursday.

Shadab Khan's controversial runout sparked debate in thrilling ODI finish

As the match approached its climax, the packed stands were left in disbelief when Afghan pacer Fazalhaq Farooqi used mankading to run out Pakistan all-rounder, Shadab Khan.

Shadab, who had been striking the ball with panache on his way to a crucial 48 off 35 balls, was the victim of Farooqi's sharp awareness. The stakes couldn't have been higher, with Pakistan requiring 11 runs off the final over.

The incident occurred on the very first ball of the final over. As Farooqi was gearing up to bowl, Shadab, perhaps sensing the urgency of the situation, left his crease in anticipation of a run. But Farooqi, displaying commendable alertness, seized the moment, dislodging the bails before releasing the ball.

Shadab’s surprise was evident and the ground echoed with mixed reactions. For many, this sudden turn of events was an unexpected twist in an already nail-biting encounter.

Though the match was headed for a gripping end, this incident will likely be the major talking point for days to come. Some will argue that Farooqi’s actions were within the spirit of the game, while others will claim it was against the unwritten ethical code of the sport.

With Shadab's dismissal, Pakistan's hopes seemed to dangle by a thread. However, young pacer Naseem Shah showed nerves of steel by unleashing a counterattack and ensured Pakistan's thrilling win by a solitary wicket. His match-winning boundary off the penultimate ball not only led Pakistan to victory but also secured the series 2-0.

Earlier in the match, Afghanistan's batting might was on full display as they put up a competitive 300/5. Rahmaullah Gurbaz's stellar knock of 151 and Ibrahim Zadra's 80 were instrumental in setting a challenging target.

After a dismal performance in the first ODI, where they were dismissed for a paltry 59, Afghanistan's spirited show in the second game would have boosted their confidence going into Asia Cup 2023.

Meanwhile, as both teams gear up for the much-anticipated Asia Cup 2023, kicking off on August 30, this series, highlighted by moments of brilliance, controversies, and a renewed rivalry promises a thrilling tournament ahead.
