West Indies middle-order batter Kavem Hodge found an interesting way to counter Nathan Lyon’s off-spin threat on Day 3 of the series-deciding second Test match against Australia at The Gabba. During the earlier stages of his innings, Hodge deflected a charged-up Lyon onto his leg side using nothing but his trousers.

The incident occurred during the 34th over of the second West Indies innings, when their lead had stretched till 128 runs.

Australian veteran Nathan Lyon removed West Indies number three Kirk McKenzie for 41 by trapping him in front of stumps. The seasoned off-spinner was subsequently received an extensive spell from captain Pat Cummins, during which he frequently troubled the visitor’s middle-order batters Alick Athanaze and Kavem Hodge.

Hodge ended up forming his own way to tackle Lyon, considering at one stage of his innings, the West Indies batter was spotted using his trousers to deflect the spinner’s short delivery. Hodge’s swift and evasive act even prompted on-air commentator at the time to say: “That is a very interesting way of deflecting a ball.”

Kavem Hodge was dismissed for 27, courtesy of Travis Head's magic. His dismissal further worsened West Indies’ second innings troubles, as they slumped to 148-5 with a lead of 170 runs in the bank. However, the Windies have managed to take their lead past 200 runs, with four wickets in hand.

Earlier in the match, West Indies scored 311 in their first innings off the back of Kavem Hodge’s 71 and identical half-centuries from Joshua Da Silva and Kevin Sinclair.

Australia, in response, had their top-order wrecked at 54-5 before Usman Khawaja, Alex Carey and captain Pat Cummins found a way to keep their deficit down to just 22 runs.
