The return of Hardik Pandya as the captain of the Mumbai Indians (MI) against his former team Gujarat Titans (GT), in Ahmedabad, was met with unexpected hostility as the cricketer faced a barrage of boos from the crowd during the coin toss ceremony.

After leading Gujarat Titans for two successive years, Hardik Pandya made a move back to Mumbai Indians where his professional career initially took off. However, in a shocking transition, MI replaced Rohit Sharma with Pandya as the captain of the team from the 2024 IPL season onwards.

Having said that, for the first since the historic trade took place, Hardik Pandya returned to Ahmedabad for MI’s season opening fixture against GT and the Ahmedabad crowd came down heavily on their former captain.

As Hardik Pandya walked out for toss along with his counterpart Shubman Gill, the crowd erupted in ‘Rohit..Rohit..Rohit’ chants to boo the MI skipper. Meanwhile, Pandya, very much aware of the crowd’s hostile reception, was left embarrassed and seemed visibly uncomfortable.

Regardless, despite the unwelcome reception, Pandya remained focused on the task at hand and elected to field first after winning the toss.

Indian cricket fans are seemingly unhappy with MI’s captaincy transition. Rohit Sharma, who led the franchise to five IPL titles, was replaced overnight, which angered the supporters.

On the other hand, Pandya’s move to ditch GT and jump ships to MI didn’t sit well with the Gujarat fans, who chose to give it back to Hardik the first chance they got.

Overall, as the tournament gains momentum, Hardik Pandya is not expected to be received well by fans across the country. It would be interesting to see how he faces Mumbai fans, who are largely Rohit Sharma loyalists.
