The 40th match of the Big Bash League between the Melbourne Stars and Hobart Hurricanes at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on January 18th was packed with drama. One such instance featured Glenn Maxwell, who narrowly escaped being caught out, adding to the thrill of the match.

The moment unfolded during the 14th over of the Melbourne Stars' innings when Chris Jordan came in to bowl. Jordan delivered a short ball at a fiery pace of 140.3 km/h, tempting Maxwell to go for a pull shot. However, the execution wasn’t perfect, and Maxwell ended up mistiming the ball. It went high in the air, straight over the bowler’s head.

Nathan Ellis from mid-off and Cameron Gannon from mid-on sprinted toward the ball, both diving to make the catch. But luck favoured Maxwell as the ball landed just short of Gannon. In the process, Gannon managed to deflect the ball into the extra-cover region, allowing Maxwell and his partner to run two quick runs. The crowd erupted in relief and applause as the star batter stayed at the crease.

Melbourne Stars Start Off Nicely Against Hurricanes

The match saw some ups and downs for the Melbourne Stars. Early on, opener Thomas Rogers was dismissed after scoring just 9 runs. Sam Harper followed shortly after, falling to Nikhil Chaudhary for a decent 23 runs. However, the Stars found hope when Beau Webster and Marcus Stoinis built a solid 45-run partnership. Stoinis showcased his power-hitting but was eventually dismissed for a well-played 32 runs.

Amid these twists, Glenn Maxwell stood out as the backbone of the innings. Known for his aggressive and inventive batting style, Maxwell was in fine form, reaching 63* at the time of writing.
