Former Indian cricketer Yograj Singh, known for his outspoken views, has found himself at the center of controversy after making sexist remarks about wives and cricket. The father of cricketer Yuvraj Singh voiced his support for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)’s new rules, which place restrictions on family members accompanying players during tours.
Yograj Singh's comments were made during an interview where he spoke about the reported new guidelines for cricketers. According to these rules, family members can join the players on a tour, but only for 14 days out of a 45-day tour. The BCCI also made domestic cricket participation mandatory for players and issued advice about avoiding personal media shoots and missing practice sessions.
Yograj Singh expressed his opinion that bringing family members on tours could interfere with a player’s focus.
"When one is traveling with the team, what is the point of traveling with your family?" he said. He further added, “It shakes your focus. You can do whatever once you retire but when you’re playing for your country then carrying your chefs and all adds an extra burden. Wives don’t really know much about cricket, why would you want your kids and wife with you? When you’re playing, the team is your family, I don’t think it is needed. I am against it."
Yograj Singh Supports Abhishek Sharma
Alongside his controversial comments on family, Yograj Singh also spoke positively about the India squad selected for the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025. He praised the BCCI for its team selection, specifically mentioning Shubman Gill, who he believes could become the future captain of India. Yograj also supported Abhishek Sharma, suggesting that he should have been included in the squad to learn and grow.
“This is the correct way of going about things, we should back and support players who are going through a rough patch," Yograj said. "I will say that Abhishek Sharma should have also been in the team as he is going to be a big player in the future.”
India’s squad for the Champions Trophy 2025 has been announced, and the team will begin their campaign against Bangladesh on February 20. India will play their matches in Dubai, as the Indian government has not allowed the team to travel to Pakistan. India’s group also includes matches against Pakistan and New Zealand.
