On Sunday, January 12, Melbourne Stars locked horns against Renegades in a Melbourne Derby clash. It was an enthralling encounter as the Stars registered a 42-run win. 

The Stars were 75/7 at one point, but Glenn Maxwell's heroics helped the Stars put 165 runs on the board. Meanwhile, eyes were on RCB star Jacob Bethell to make a mark, but he failed with the bat, leaving his side in trouble. 

Meanwhile, this article will discuss three reasons why RCB made a mistake in signing Bethell for IPL 2025. 

1. Inconsistent with the Bat

It is worth noting that the RCB were at the centre of criticism during the IPL 2025 mega auction when they let big overseas stars go and waited for Bethell to come under the hammer on day 2.

However, RCB's 2.60 crore buy has been inconsistent with the bat in the ongoing BBL season. It is worth noting that Bethell has amassed just 107 runs in the BBL 14 in seven innings, averaging 15.43. His highest score was 49 (36) against the Stars in their first-round match. 

Thus, Bethell is yet to prove himself and show consistency. 


2. Yet To Show All-Round Abilities

When RCB bought Bethell, they looked at him for his all-round abilities. However, he is yet to prove his worth as an all-rounder. Even in the BBL, Bethell has just 2 wickets in four innings. 

Meanwhile, Maxwell, who will now represent PBKS in IPL 2025, was a great all-rounder for RCB as he also shone with the ball when required. 

3. Succumbs Under Pressure

What has been seen so far off Bethell is that he surrenders under pressure. Even in the match against the Stars, when the team was looking up to him to do the finishing job. 

Now Bethell will be representing RCB in the upcoming season and the pressure will be at the highest. It is worth noting that the fans expectations are high and it would be difficult for Bethell to play under that immense pressure.
