South Africa's preparations for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 have been hit by a series of injury setbacks, particularly to their pace attack. Just before the start of the prestigious tournament, the Proteas has faced the possibility of missing Gerald Coetzee due to a hamstring injury.
The ace pacer, who had been expected to play a crucial role in South Africa's fast-bowling lineup, sustained a left hamstring strain during the ongoing SA20. As a result, he will miss the remainder of the SA20 season and his participation in the upcoming Champions Trophy is also doubted.
The injury came as a further blow to the South African camp, as earlier Anrich Nortje was also ruled out of the Champions Trophy due to a back injury. It is also important to mention that Nandre Burger is also going through a niggle.
Injury Update On Gerald Coetzee
In a significant development, the Proteas Men took to their social media (Twitter) and provided a recent update on Gerald Coetzee's injury on January 19. They mentioned that despite the injury, Coetzee still remains in contention for the Champions Trophy.
They also stated that the medical team is closely monitoring his recovery, and the final decision on his inclusion in the squad will be made within the first week of February.
It is important to note that, Coetzee have played 14 ODI's for South Africa in which he has scalped 31 wickets at an economy of 6.48.
South Africa, led by captain Temba Bavuma, will begin their Champions Trophy campaign on February 21, against Afghanistan at the Karachi Stadium. The team will be fight hard to secure their second-ever Champions Trophy title.
