In a scary incident, the Big Bash League encounter between Brisbane Heat and Hobart Hurricanes was interrupted, as fire broke out near the stands of the iconic Gabba in Brisbane. Hobart Hurricanes, who have already qualified for the playoffs, are taking on the defending champions in their backyard. However, the high-voltage clash witnessed an interruption due to an unfortunate incident.
Batting first, hosts Brisbane Heat posted a mammoth total of 201 runs, riding on Marnus Labuschagne, Matt Renshaw and Tom Alsop. In response, Hobart Hurricanes had an outstanding start to their innings, with Mitchell Owen and Caleb Jewell forming a quick-fire stand for the opening wicket.
However, after the conclusion of the fourth over, fire broke out near one of the stands, forcing an interruption in the proceedings. Nevertheless, the ground staff and security swiftly controlled the fire, preventing any damage to the spectators in the stands.
Hurricanes Lose Owen After A Fiery Start
Hobart Hurricanes' openers Mitchell Owen and Caleb Jewell provided the visitors with a blistering start, capitalising on the batting-friendly conditions at the Gabba. The explosive batters instantly took on the Heat's premier pacers, Michael Neser and Xavier Bartlett, helping the Hurricanes race to 80 runs in no time.
However, Spencer Johnson eventually drew the first blood for Brisbane Heat, dismissing Owen in his second over. As of writing, the Hurricanes were 84 for one in 7.2 overs, needing 118 runs to win in 76 balls.
