In the 15th match of the ongoing Women’s Big Bash League 2024 between Hobart Hurricanes Women and Sydney Sixers Women at Bellerive Oval, Hobart, on November 6, an unexpected incident occurred. During the match, Australian batter Ellyse Perry appeared to be run out, yet the umpire did not signal it, nor did anyone appeal.

Ellyse Perry opened the innings with Alyssa Healy and began well. However, Zoe Cooke ended their partnership, dismissing Perry for four runs. Healy, however, set the tone and cruised to a score of 82 runs. When she was at 82, the runout incident involving Perry took place.

The event happened in the final over of the Sydney Sixers’ innings when Ellyse Perry and Carmichael were at the crease, and Heather Graham was bowling. Graham delivered a ball outside off, which Carmichael cut to short third man. Carmichael called for a quick single, but Perry reached the crease a bit slower than expected.

The throw came in quickly, Lizelle Lee collected it, and whipped off the bails in a flash. Surprisingly, no one appealed, and the square-leg umpire didn’t send the decision upstairs. Replays later showed Perry was short of her crease. Lee appealed only after seeing it on the big screen, but by then, it was too late to review the decision.

The replay confirmed Perry was indeed run out at the keeper’s end, yet no one appealed. This reflected a missed opportunity by the wicketkeeper and fielders, which could have benefited the team.

The Hurricanes won the toss and chose to bowl first, a decision that paid off as Zoe Cooke struck early, dismissing Alyssa Healy. Sarah Jennifer Bryce was dismissed for a duck soon after, while Ashleigh Gardner and Hollie Armitage contributed 21 and 30 runs, respectively. Ellyse Perry anchored the innings with a solid 86 runs, helping the Sixers set a target of 156 runs.
