Dhruv Jurel made his presence felt on the field on Day 4 after his twin failures with the bat in the first Test of the five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test series. On the fourth afternoon at Perth, the 23-year-old cricketer held on to a blinder at short leg to account for the exit of Australian tail-ender Mitchell Starc amidst his threatening rearguard partnership with Alex Carey.

Jurel’s flashing brilliance on the field handed Washington Sundar his first wicket of the match, and took Team India a step closer to a historic victory at the Optus Stadium.

Dhruv Jurel plucked a reactionary blinder at the stroke of Tea break on Day 4 of the Perth Test. Stationed at short leg, the youngster held on to Starc’s attempted flick off Washington Sundar with his outstretched right hand as Australia lost its eighth wicket in a dauting run-chase.

Jurel’s fielding brilliance sparked Australia’s tail-end collapse, as Team India bowlers Washington Sundar and Harshit Rana shrugged off their remaining two wickets shortly after the Tea break. Folding up Australia for just 238, Jasprit Bumrah’s visiting drawcards sealed the Test by a record margin of 295 runs to go 1-0 up in the five-match series.

While Dhruv Jurel excelled on the field, he failed to deliver with the bat as he registered scores of just 11 and 1 across both innings of the match. Captain Jasprit Bumrah bagged the ‘Player of the Match’ award for his eight-wicket haul, and he received much assistance from his pace mates Mohammed Siraj, Harshit Rana and even from debutant Nitish Kumar Reddy.

With the Border-Gavaskar Trophy title and a place in the WTC final on the line, the Indian team will now travel to the Adelaide Oval for the second Test of the series. The much-awaited pink ball affair will be played between December 6 and December 10.
