Indian cricketing batter, Cheteshwar Pujara put on a brilliant batting display for Sussex against Northamptonshire in Sunday’s match of the England Domestic One-Day Cup 2023.

Cheteshwar Pujara's century for Sussex couldn't prevent a loss

Pujara’s unbeaten century, however, ended up being a fruitless endeavour as Northamptonshire managed to chase down the revised target to clinch a thrilling three-wicket victory.

The match, originally slated as a 50-over affair, was curtailed to 45 overs per side due to a rain interruption. Sussex, who were put into bat first, found themselves in a precarious position at 21/2 after just 7.3 overs. With both openers back in the hunt quickly, the Indian Test specialist was summoned to the crease.

Coming in at number three, Pujara showcased his signature brand of solid and patient cricket, stringing together a fighting innings for Sussex. His effort was a representation of lone defiance, as he single-handedly guided his team to a respectable total of 240/7 in 45 overs.

The veteran's unbeaten knock of 106 runs was a treat full of classic cricketing shots interspersed with bouts of aggressive play. Pujara's 119-ball innings that was studded with two sixes and four boundaries served as the bulwark of the Sussex total.

It was a vital knock, particularly since none of his teammates managed to cross the 30-run mark, painting a clear picture of Pujara's crucial role in the line-up.

Northamptonshire played commendably and reached the revised target of 243 runs in 43.4 overs. The response was kick-started by Indian opener Prithvi Shaw, who laid the foundation for the successful chase.

Shaw blazed off the starting blocks, launching a boundary attack off the first two deliveries. His aggressive 26-run cameo off just 17 balls injected early momentum into the Northamptonshire chase.

Despite his inability to transform his quickfire start into a bigger knock, Shaw's initial thrust set the tone for the rest of the batting order, resulting in a three-wicket victory.
