Indian captain, Rohit Sharma, recently reflected on his emotional experience of watching the World Cup 2011 from home, during a close encounter with the coveted trophy for the upcoming marquee tournament in Barbados.

Rohit Sharma's 2011 World Cup regret fuels his desire for redemption

The event was part of the pre-tournament Trophy Tour leading up to World Cup 2023, set to begin in India from October 5 to November 19. Rohit, who was the top run-scorer in the 2019 edition, is now set to lead the Indian team in the cricket fiesta.

A past heaped with disappointment has fuelled his determination to excel in the upcoming tournament.

During his face-to-face meeting with the World Cup 2023 Trophy, Rohit candidly shared his experience of the 2011 tournament, an emotional period when he was a spectator rather than a participant in India's historic victory.

“2011 was a memorable one for all of us, I remember watching it from home, every single match, every single ball which was being bowled and that was being played. There were two kinds of emotions, one was obviously I was not a part of it, so I was a little disappointed. I decided I was not going to watch the World Cup, but again, the second memory I remember was that India was playing so well, the quarter-finals onwards,” said Rohit referring to the emotional turbulence of that time.

However, looking ahead to the upcoming World Cup 2023, Rohit exuded optimism and determination. He stated that success in the World Cup is a marathon, not a sprint.

"But hopefully, you know, we are back home again, so hopefully we can turn things around and it’s still a long way to go. And you know you can’t win the World Cup in one or two days. You got to play well for an entire month, month and a half, and be consistent. So you know, we are trying everything we can, from our perspective to make sure we are ready for the World Cup,” concluded Rohit.

Rohit Sharma will be next seen in the Asia Cup that starts on 30th of  August and India would hope to do well in this edition of the continental cup after failing to impress last time around.
