The pillar of Indian cricket for more than a decade, Cheteshwar Pujara, returned to first-class cricket in style on Saturday (January 6). Just when India seem to be struggling to find their perfect No. 3 in red-ball cricket, the veteran slammed a fantastic century at Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Rajkot, during Saurashtra’s Ranji Trophy 2023/24 against Jharkhand.

After knocking Jharkhand over for 142 in the first innings, Saurashtra, as of this writing, are in pole position to secure a scintillating victory. Pujara was the architect of the potential result, as his 61st first-class century has taken his side to 338/4.

Pujara is no longer in the mix of things for India, who have been testing Shubman Gill as their new No. 3 in Tests. The stylish batter, one after another, has been failing to make a significant impact, and Pujara’s glorious return could tempt the BCCI to bring him back into the whites again.

Apart from Pujara, Saurashtra’s Arpit Vasavada and Harvik Desai made noteworthy contributions, scoring 68 and 85, respectively. Sheldon Jackson played his part as well, hitting a brilliant 54 after coming to bat at No. 3, whereas Snell Patel was the only one who failed.

Not to forget, the Jaydev Unadkat-led side still have Aditya Jadeja, Chirag Jani, and Dharmendrasinh Jadeja to come.
