Indian Under-19 captain Uday Saharan failed to steer his side to safety against Australia in the final of the ICC Under-19 World Cup 2024 at Benoni. Batting at number four and arriving to the crease following the early dismissals of opener Arshin Kulkarni and in-form Musheer Khan, Saharan was holed out at backward point while attempting to score some quick runs in their tense run-chase.

His dismissal handed Australian paceman Mahli Beardman his second wicket of the innings, after the latter had already accounted for the wicket of Musheer.

Uday Saharan crumbles in World Cup final pressure

Uday Saharan, who steered India Under-19 to a remarkable recovery against South Africa in the semifinals of the 2024 Under-19 World Cup, failed to replicate his heroics in the title clash against Australia.

Desperate for some quick runs amidst tumbling wickets and mounting rate, Saharan attempted to slash Beardman for a boundary towards deep backward region. However, the cricketer merely managed to find his Australian counterpart Hugh Weibgen, who held on to a stunning catch at backward point.

A visibly disgusted Saharan eventually had to walk back to the sheds with just eight runs to his name, as India Under-19 slipped further at 55-3 from 16.5 overs.

Uday Saharan’s mere eight-run effort extended his Under-19 World Cup 2024 tally to 397 runs. All set to finish the tournament as its highest run-getter, the prodigious 19-year-old talent tallied his runs at a splendid average of 56.71, with a century and three additional scores of 50 or more to his name.

Saharan’s dismissal was followed by Sachin Dhas’ downfall a while later as India Under-19 fell further in their 254-run task at 90-5.
