During the nail-biting semifinal clash of the U-19 World Cup in Benoni, India staged a magnificent comeback against South Africa, thanks to a critical innings of 96 runs off 95 balls by Sachin Dhas and a supportive 81 off 124 balls from captain Uday Saharan.

Sachin Dhas revealed strategy behind semifinal win vs South Africa

The duo's incredible fight and strategic batting helped India overturn a dismal start, losing their first four wickets for 32 runs to chase down a target of 245 runs. Their efforts were instrumental in securing India's place in their ninth U-19 World Cup final.

Dhas and Saharan's partnership of 171 runs for the fifth wicket came at a crucial time, pulling India back from the brink of disaster and steering them close to victory.

Reflecting on their strategy on bcci.tv, Sachin Dhas mentioned that their goal was to remain at the crease as long as possible, fully believing in their ability to complete the chase. Despite not finishing the game themselves, their substantial contributions laid the groundwork for India's win.

"The plan was to bat till the end. We had the belief that we could take it all the way. But it's fine (as we couldn't complete the chase), but we won that match and that's what matters. I was telling Uday that we would play till the end. We thought we would take our time, pace our innings, and understand the opposition bowling attack. South Africa were bowling well. So it was a bit tough. But Uday and I had to believe, and we thought that one big partnership could win us the game." said Dhas.

Dhas further credited their success to the experience gained during a tri-series held in South Africa before the World Cup, which acclimated the team to the local conditions and bolstered their confidence.

Saharan, in particular, received praise from Dhas for his continuous support and encouragement throughout their crucial stand.

“That tournament (in South Africa before World Cup) helped us a lot. We got used to the pitch, the weather and the conditions here. We got good practice, we bonded well. Our batters showed good form, so that series really helped. Uday has also batted well throughout the tournament. Also, he backed me throughout our partnership, he kept on encouraging me that we have to do it and that we can do it. So all credit goes to Uday,” added the young batter.

Meanwhile, as India prepares for the final showdown against either Australia or Pakistan, the team will draw confidence from their thrilling semifinal win, ready to defend their title and aim for another victorious campaign in the U-19 World Cup.
