An added layer of excitement and intrigue was added to the World Test Championship final being played at The Oval between India and Australia when Shubman Gill was adjudged to have been caught in the gully by Cameron Green off the bowling of Scott Boland in India’s second innings.

Set an imposing target of 444 to win, India started briskly with openers Gill and Rohit Sharma stroking the ball around with intent. However, the first jolt was sent through the Indian system by the first ball of the eighth over, delivered by Scott Boland. Bowled on a good length, it bounced a bit more than Gill expected, causing him to jab at it with hard hands. The ball flew off the edge to Cameron Green, stationed in the gully region, who dove low to his left, stuck a hand out, and grabbed the ball in his large palm.

However, in completing the catch, it appeared that the ball, ensconced in his hand, brushed the ground, prompting the umpires to send the decision to the Third Umpire to be reviewed. The question for Richard Kettleborough to answer was whether Green had full control of the ball at the time, and he decided in the affirmative. “Out” flashed up on the big screen, eliciting a disappointed reaction from the crowd.

It wasn’t just the crowd, who began chants of “Cheater, Cheater” soon after the decision was upheld, that did not agree with the Third Umpire’s decision. The cameras caught Rohit Sharma loudly exclaiming “No!” when the decision flashed up on the screen, after having been engaged in conversation with the on-field umpires about the decision. The umpires decided to call tea immediately afterwards, leaving a raging debate among fans on both sides.

Opinions are divided on whether the catch was fair or not, but the fact remains that Gill was dismissed and Cheteshwar Pujara arrived at the crease in his place. As such, India now have nine wickets left to chase down 400-odd runs if they are to complete this miraculous chase.
