India and Australia are currently embroiled in the final of the 2023 World Test Championship being played from June 7-11 at Lords. Indian skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to bowl first, keeping in mind the overcast conditions and the seemingly bowler-friendly track. However, after an initial period of uncertainty, Australia took the upper hand in the Test match and posted a commanding total of 469 in their first innings.

India got off to a similarly uncertain start in their innings, losing Rohit Sharma for 15 as early as the sixth over. Fellow opener Shubman Gill soon followed, dismissed by Scott Boland in bizarre fashion. Despite coming into the game on the back of a prolific Indian Premier League (IPL 2023) season, Gill appeared to completely misjudge the line of a seemingly straightforward delivery, shouldering arms to a ball that went on to crash into off stump.

Cheteshwar Pujara came in to bat at number three for India, another batter in excellent nick. The veteran batter had a prolific stint in the English County setup with Sussex. However, he also fell prey to the same mode of dismissal as Gill, shouldering arms to a Cameron Green delivery in the 14th over and being bowled for 14 off 25 balls.

Pujara's dismissal left India in a spot of bother at 50/3 in response to Australia's mammoth score of 469 in the first innings.

After losing two of their most in-form batters, the pressure will be on India's experienced middle order batters to rebuild the innings.

For Australia, Travis Head and Steve Smith smashed huge centuries to put them in a commanding position. Head played the role of the aggressor, scoring 163 off 174 balls, while Smith was more sedate and circumspect, scoring 121 off 268 balls.
