Marnus Labuschagne’s part-time leg-spin came to the fore for Australia against age-old rivals England in the first ODI of their five-match series. Turning up for his team at Trent Bridge in Nottingham, the 30-year-old all-round apparent picked up three key English wickets, including the prized scalps of a well-set Ben Duckett and interim captain Harry Brook.

Labuschagne’s startling three-fer restricted England to 315 after the hosts had reached 213-2 in 32 overs.

Labuschagne Triggers English Collapse With Career-Best Figures

Marnus Labuschagne, who claimed two ODI wickets in his first 52 appearances for Australia, more than doubled his career tally by picking up three English wickets in the first match of their September 2024 series. Taking the field at Trent Bridge, the 30-year-old struck in his opening over by denying Ben Duckett off a well-deserved century with a sharp caught-and-bowled.

Labuschagne’s timely breakthrough also broke Duckett’s brewing partnership with England captain Harry Brook at 213-3 in 32.4 overs. The part-time Australian leg-spinner was clattered for a boundary and a six by Brook in his following over, before getting his revenge with a similar caught-and-bowled to orchestrate the exit of the interim English captain.

Marnus Labuschagne then had Jofra Archer holed out by Cooper Connolly at point to seal career-best ODI figures of 3-39 from six overs. His spell, coupled with Adam Zampa’s triple strike restricted the Englishmen to just 315 in 49.4 overs after they looked all set to notch up a 350-plus score with ease.

The match constitutes a part of Australia’s three-week long tour of England, which commenced with a series of three T20I games earlier this month. Australia won the first T20I by 28 runs while the hosts prevailed with a three-wicket margin to level the series in the second.

The honors of the T20I rubber were eventually shared after the Manchester washout of September 15.
