Australia’s Test reject Nathan McSweeney failed to lead defending champions Brisbane Heat into recovery in match number 19 of the BBL 2024-25 season against the winless Melbourne Stars. Taking field at the Gabba and batting at number three, McSweeney arrived to the middle following the early departure of his captain Colin Munro within just the second over of the match.

The 25-year-old, who recently featured in Australia’s playing XI for the first three Tests against India before getting replaced by debutant Sam Konstas at the MCG, faced 15 deliveries to score a sluggish nine before getting knocked over by ageing warhorse Peter Siddle.

Peter Siddle’s vicious inswinger topples McSweeney

Nathan McSweeney listed just nine runs from 15 deliveries as he kept losing partners at the other end. With Tom Banton and Matt Renshaw back in the sheds at the time of reaching 33-3 in five overs, defending champions Brisbane Heat also lost McSweeney to a vicious inswinger from Australia’s pace veteran and ageing warhorse Peter Siddle.

McSweeney’s departure further worsened Heat’s troubles as the hosts crashed to 39-4, eventually to 68-5 after the first 12 overs of the match.

Prior to the match, Melbourne Stars captain Marcus Stoinis won the toss and opted to field first. His new ball duo of Joel Paris and Mark Steketee responded strongly with the early wickets of Matt Renshaw, Colin Munro and Tom Banton.

Max Bryant at number five navigated Heat’s faltering innings past the 100-run mark inside 16 overs courtesy of his counterattacking partnerships with Paul Walter (21 off 18) and Will Prestwidge. The match marks a must-win one for Brisbane Heat, as the defending champions need to snap its newfound losing streak after having recorded two wins upfront.

Moreover, the Marcus Stoinis-led Melbourne Stars are languishing at the bottom of the BBL 2024-25 points table with crushing defeats in each of their five games so far.
