Pakistan batting legend Babar Azam and Australian pace demon Mitchell Starc were involved in a brief yet fiery verbal exchange on Day 3 of their third Test match at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG).

The incident occurred during the third over of the second Pakistan innings late on Day 3, at a time when Babar was yet to open his account. In the last ball of the over, Starc darted down a short delivery towards on-strike batter Saim Ayub’s off-stump channel before the speedster shifted his focus to Babar at the non-strikers end during the change of ends.

Australian paceman Mitchell Starc resorted to verbal sparring with seasoned Pakistan batter Babar Azam after he knocked out Abdullah Shafique within the very first over of the innings. After Shafique’s opening partner, Saim Ayub, had safely negotiated the following over off Starc, the speedster was spotted exchanging a few words with Babar at the non-striker’s end.

Babar Azam went on to conjure just 23 runs in the innings to conclude Pakistan’s entire three-match Test tour of Australia without a fifty-plus score to his name. Starc’s pacemate Josh Hazlewood struck thrice in the space of five deliveries in the penultimate over of the day to extinguish Pakistan’s 14-run first innings advantage.

The visitors will now resume their innings at 68-7 on Day 4, with first-innings half-centurions Mohammad Rizwan and Aamer Jamal still batting at the crease.

Earlier in the match, Pakistan tallied 313 by Day 1 and ended up securing a handy 14-run lead off the back of Aamer Jamal’s scintillating six-fer. The ‘Men in Green’, under new skipper Shan Masood, entered the contest off the back of a 0-2 deficit to the hosts.
