India Women ravaged their Australian counterparts by nine wickets in the first T20I to take an early lead in their three-match series at Navi Mumbai’s DY Patil Stadium. Hosts openers Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma pumped out majestic half-centuries in the run-chase to guide India past the finishing line with 16 balls to spare.

Earlier in the game, young Indian fast bowler Titas Sadhu snared four Australian wickets, including three inside the opening powerplay with the new ball, where she even packed Tahlia McGrath and Ashleigh Gardner for ducks off successive deliveries.

After the match, senior pro and team vice-captain Mandhana praised Sadhu for her match-winning spell, and also signified the importance of India’s emphatic win after their 0-3 drubbing in the ODI series earlier this week.

Smriti Mandhana “amazed” by Sadhu’s clarity

A jubilant Smriti Mandhana expressed her excitement after Team India routed Australia by nine wickets to go 1-0 up in their three-match series, considering the ‘Women in Blue’ were walloped 0-3 in the ODIs by the same opponents.

After the match, the 27-year-old claimed that the team learned from its mistakes and had an extensive meeting before heading to the T20Is. She said:

“I think the way the ODI series went, I think we all were really disappointed with the way we put up in that particular series. We've been working on ourselves in the last two days, and we got so really pleased that we could get the first win on the board and really happy. I think the last two days we did analyze a lot in terms of what went wrong and what mistakes we made as a team, as a bowling unit, as a fielding unit, and as a batting unit, and we did have a good 1-hour meeting with all of us and we're frank about what went wrong and I think today's decision to play four seamers went well.”

Smriti Mandhana also heaped extensive praise on Indian spinner Titas Sadhu for her match-winning four-fer against the world champions. The seasoned Indian campaigner expressed her admiration for the youngster’s work ethics and clarity in field placements. Mandhana further added that Bengal has already given India one legendary fast bowler in Jhulan Goswami, thus implying that Sadhu might well be on her way to greatness going ahead.

“The way Titas Sadhu bowled was amazing. I think we've seen a little bit of her in the Asian Games, but coming today and bowling that way against a good Australian team, I think happy for her.”

“Well, I think she comes from Bengal, and definitely, Bengal has given us one legendary cricketer with Jhulu di and I think we shouldn't get into comparison, but I think the way she's sorted, I think the more I look at her age, to be that sort, she knows where she wants to bowl. She will always come to you and tell you, this is my field and this is where I want to bowl. I think that kind of clarity to have at this age is amazing to see. And with that, I think good work ethics, that's two things. A good combination to have. And I hope that she keeps doing that.”

Smriti Mandhana as well as Titas Sadhu will now turn up for Team India in the second T20I of their three-match series on January 7.
